What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the use of medications to help patients relax during dental treatments. At The Studio at Fenton Family Dental, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral conscious sedation to help our patients feel comfortable throughout their visit.

Benefits Of Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is a safe and effective way to reduce fear and anxiety during dental treatments. Utilizing these services can help to reduce the anxiety associated with certain dental procedures, allowing the individual to receive the care they need in a safe, comfortable environment. There are many benefits to sedation dentistry, including:

  • Decreased anxiety and fear associated with dental visits
  • Reduced gag reflex, making treatment easier
  • Increased comfort and relaxation during procedures
  • Ability to complete longer, more complex treatments in fewer visits
  • Reduced memory of the appointment
  • Minimized risk of suffering a traumatic dental experience

Who Is A Good Candidate For Sedation Dentistry?

Patients who suffer from fear, anxiety, or phobia of dental visits are good candidates for sedation dentistry. Additionally, individuals with sensitive gag reflexes, difficulty getting numb, or those who need to have a more lengthy procedure done in one visit may benefit from sedation dentistry. We also find that sedation helps relax patients with special needs and those who have difficulty sitting still for extended periods of time.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is one of the two forms of sedation we offer at The Studio at Fenton Family Dental. Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose and works quickly to relax the patient. Nitrous oxide is considered a light sedative—allowing patients to remain conscious throughout the entire procedure while also feeling calm, relaxed, and free from anxiety. One of the benefits of nitrous oxide is that its effects wear off almost immediately, allowing patients to resume their daily activities shortly after treatment. This means patients are able to drive home and return to school or work following the appointment.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is a deeper form of sedation that is designed to help patients relax during dental treatments. This sedative is administered orally and typically takes effect between 30 minutes and an hour after ingestion. During oral conscious sedation, patients remain conscious but can become drowsy and may even fall asleep during their visit. Once the effects of oral conscious sedation wear off, patients may feel drowsy; for this reason, we request that they arrange for a ride home. We also recommend patients refrain from operating any heavy machinery or performing any other activities that require focus and concentration until they are feeling fully alert.

At The Studio at Fenton Family Dental, we are committed to helping our patients feel safe and comfortable during their dental appointment.
